January 2024: On 30 January 2024, the European Commission approved a EUR 550 million Italian scheme to support investments in hydrogen-based industrial processes and foster the transition towards a net-zero economy, in line with the Green Deal Industrial Plan.

January 2021: Hydrogen is referenced in the draft Italian Recovery Plan. The plan covers every type of project to make Italy a more modern, more digital, greener, and inclusive country. Among the primary missions of the draft plan approved by the Council of Ministers on 12 January 2021 is the green revolution and the ecological transition. The largest slice of resources is reserved for this purpose: EUR 68.9 billion. It encompasses green hydrogen and renewable energy, cycle tracks to reforestation, and waste recycling. In particular, EUR 6.3 billion is intended for projects on "Green enterprise and the circular economy"; EUR 18.2 billion for "Energy transition and sustainable local mobility"; EUR 29.3 billion for "Energy efficiency and building requalification"; and EUR 15 billion for "Protection and enhancement of land and water resources."

December 2020: The Italian Ministry of Economic Development completed the public consultation on, and is going to publish the final version of, the Guidelines for the Italian National Hydrogen Strategy. These guidelines aim to identify the sectors in which it is believed that this energy vector can become competitive in the short term, but also to verify the areas of intervention that are best suited to developing and implementing the use of hydrogen.
The Government opened a public consultation on the Guidelines for the Strategy, which closed on 21 December 2020.
